Hmmm...I don't think I've seen the most beautiful thing ever because I'd be able to remember it without having to think too hard. But I've seen many beautiful things in general. I think something really beautiful is when it rains (like today) and it looks like grass and some plants turn greener and brighter and they seem to be more alive than before. -paula

Golden Beauty

The most beautiful thing I have ever seen is my second grade Halloween costume. I think that a context is necessary. I had decided to be the Golden Snitch from "Harry Potter" for Halloween. By the day before Halloween I still hadn't made my costume, this was incredibly stressful, especially for me: an anxiety-prone seven-year-old. I went to bed this night before Halloween in a panic; I wasn't going to have a costume. The next morning my mother woke me up and brought me into out dining room. My costume was laid out on the table. It was a golden, perfect beauty. It consisted of an oversized gold silk shirt that had the Hogwarts crest ironed on to it. The shirt had a liquid-y shimmer. My mother has attached beautiful wings made of crinkly gold foil, and white feathers. She decorated white tights with gold stars and spirals, and finished the costume with golden booties with curled toes. Every detail was perfect.

-Ranking things is a symptom of people's desire to judge and be judged. I've seen many beautiful things and many ugly things, but I have never felt like I should order and quantify my thoughts.

-The sky is the most beautiful thing I have seen. It never ceases to awe me; when am so full of emotion i can look up at the stormy sky and realize how powerful the universe is around me. I could spend forever just watching it change, the clouds shifting, the way the sunrise changes every time you blink, if i were an ancient Greek i would watch the skies for signs

Filming Final Artwork

Last week we were filming a video outside the Hayward Gallery. We had to chose a suitable bench, in particularly we wanted a seat which was bright. We fixed the video camera behind the bench so that when the couple sit down, the camera can record the back of the couples. The couples had to talk about the most beautiful thing they have ever seen or experienced in life. We were recording the couples but there will be no sound in the video, it is only for backup so we can transcribe the recording into subtitles.

Two of our crew members were writing about the couples thoughts. One of us were doing the sound recording. Few of us were recruiting couples and they were also offering vouchers to them.

Two of us were recording the couples when they were talking about the most beautifulest thing they have ever seen or experienced.

Could this be MY Bad World?

i awake 4rm the sickening sorrow of my life

i thrust my fingers through the stream of strangers...

my home immersed in memories fade

as i approach it ... i hasten away enclosed amongst foolish disbelief...

i descend into my eternal siesta...

only to wake up once

more enlighting others the art of my nightmares

repetition...

i have painted my own horror......

i have painted my own fate...

the artist within me knows not of art but life

Inspired by artist Ed Ruscha, the photos below were taken in different neighborhoods of Los Angeles, by teens from the MOCA Apprenticeship Program (MAP). The photos provide the viewer an intimate snap shot of someone's front door when closed and a second with the door slightly open-welcoming the viewer to step inside. The homes in the photos are of Apprentices, friends and strangers. This concept represents a contrast to Ruscha, who is known for drawing and painting the exterior of buildings.

The next series of photos explore the importance of relationships and how they make life matter and turn the "Bad" into "Good".

Living in Los Angeles

I have lived in Los Angeles for a majority of my life. I feel that I know the city well, and that I have explored many of its niches, subcultures, and neighborhoods. Through my exploration I have come to the conclusion that every human in Los Angeles lives in a different Los Angeles due to their experiences, interests, family, and a number of other contributing factors (this is true of every city). I take great pride in this and in MY Los Angles. However, Los Angeles, like many famous cities, has a characterized image attached to it. As much as I laugh at the world's view of Los Angeles, I can't help but to acknowledge the depressing fact that the characterized world view is based has a degree of truth in it; but, this isn't all of Los Angeles. Like I said everyone lives in a different Los Angeles, and Los Angeles is a city of daunting proportion. The idea of assigning it one identity is impossible. For now the only true way of branding Los Angeles is YOUR NAME HERE's Los Angeles.

Introducing the the Ed Ruscha exhibition

For our second session at the Southbank Centre we visited the just recently opened Ed Ruscha exhibition at the Hayward Gallery which is titled: Fifty Years of Painting and is a retrospective solely of his painting work for the last fifty years.

We worked in small groups to select a cluster of paintings that we liked or were particularly drawn to and then we shared with the rest of the group our interpretations of the work, this sharing was recorded and you can view below. Also, at the end of the video the group ask some questions to the LA group.

London Artists meet

Today all the young artists from the four London schools met each other and Davina Drummond and Daniel Wallis at the South Bank Centre. As a way to get to know each we formed small groups and tried to find things that we had in common, for example music we like or food we dislike. Next we selected things that we had in common, which we found interesting and created slogans about them and wrote them on boards, with a statement on one side and a question on the other side of the board. The video below documents us getting to know each other through the process of creating the slogans.

Project Introdcution

Artists Davina Drummond and Daniel Wallis will collaborate with 20 young people from north-, south-, east- and west-London to make a new piece of artwork to be projected on to the side of The Royal Festival Hall.

The piece will explore notions of locality in both London and L.A. where the group will be in contact with young people working at MOCA. Responding to the Hayward exhibition ‘Ed Ruscha: 50 Years of Painting’ the group will use text as an active tool in engaging the viewer, encouraging passers-by at the launch event of their work to interact with it directly via mobile phone; viewers responses will appear within the projected work.

The artists will use a mobile phone as a hub of communication over the two months spent developing project. They will text and picture messaging ideas and thoughts to it to share, using it as a modern communal sketch-book. This phone will be displayed in The South Bank Centre’s Poetry Library as a way of archiving the development of an artwork produced by people separated by different locations.
